Supreme Court: A Dream, 1992
26 x 12.5 in
silk ties, handkerchief, tailor’s ruler, waxed linen, thread
I made Supreme Court: A Dream in 1992 during the time of the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill hearings. I was in my studio listening to the hearings on NPR and one night I had a dream in which I felt powerless before the authority of my male doctor. I transcribed the narrative of the dream onto vintage silk ties, with bits of a handkerchief with a Little Red Riding Hood theme randomly stitched in.
How to measure progress when the ruler is bent? The narrative, unfortunately, is much the same as it was twenty-seven years ago.
